In the midst of a catastrophic global pandemic, a vicious election season, a failing economy, an ineffective government, a staggering unemployment rate and numerous natural disasters, Urinetown was a much needed distraction from the world around us. Teaching musical theatre during a pandemic was no easy task. When we came back in-person, the challenges of leading and educating student actors were difficult. When we chose to produce Urinetown, we knew that we wanted to provide the students with as "normal" of a process, even though we were not allowed to perform in public. I developed a plan to rehearse together in-person (following all health protocols of masking - and even face shields). Since we were not allowed to take masks off in a group setting, each individual actor filmed their track separately. No actor was ever on set with another actor! The design team and I worked to create a safe and collaborative environment for the students. The scenic designer and I developed a process for the film editing. We used a green screen in one theater and a set in another theater. Together, we edited the show with hundreds of files - each actor layered in one at a time (exceeding over 250 hours of editing). Although this is not my preferred method of creating theatre, I was proud of our team and thrilled that our department was able to give our students this opportunity. |
